語源
'arioso'はイタリア語に由来し、特にイタリア語の語形'arioso'からで、語根の'aria'は『歌（旋律）』『歌の曲（air）』を意味した。
'arioso'はイタリアの音楽用語（イタリア語'arioso'、'aria'由来）として17〜18世紀にオペラ用語の発展とともに英語に取り入れられ、英語の音楽語彙としてそのまま使われるようになった。
当初は『旋律的な』『風通しのよい』という広い意味だったが、英語では次第に『アリアに似た短い歌唱部分』や『レチタティーヴォとアリアの中間の歌唱様式』など専門的な意味に定着した。
