語源
「ariel」はヘブライ語（『Ariʾēl』〈אריאל〉）に由来し、『ari』が「獅子」、「el』が「神」を意味した。
『ariel』はヘブライ語・聖書の用例から英語に入り、文学（特にシェイクスピア）で精霊の名として用いられるようになり、のちに人名と空気の精を表す語の双方として英語に定着した。
もともとは「神の獅子」という人名を意味していたが、時を経て英語では空気の精や精霊を指す用法も生じ、同時に人名としても残っている。
