語源
「aridity」はラテン語に由来し、具体的にはラテン語の『ariditas』（『aridus』から）に由来する。『aridus』は「乾いた」を意味し、接尾辞『-itas』は「状態」を表す名詞を作る。
『aridity』は後期ラテン語の『ariditas』（ラテン語『aridus』に由来）から変化し、学術ラテン語などを経て現代英語の『aridity』になった。
もともとは『乾燥』（物理的な水分の欠如）を意味していたが、時を経て『不毛』『興味の欠如』などの比喩的な意味も帯びるようになった。
