語源
「arefaction」は変形語として「rarefaction」に関係し、最終的にはラテン語の 'rarificāre'（希薄にする）に由来。'rārus'（まばら、薄い）＋ 'facere'（作る）から形成。
「rarefaction」は中世ラテン語や古フランス語を経て英語に入り、変形の綴りである「arefaction」も歴史的に代替形として見られた。
元々は「まばらにする／薄くする」という意味だったが、現代では主に「密度の低下」一般および縦波における低圧相を指すようになった。
