語源
「Arcturus」はラテン語・ギリシャ語に由来し、ギリシャ語の「Arktouros（Ἀρκτοῦρος）」に由来する。ここで「arktos」は「熊」、「ouros」は「見守る者／番人」を意味した。
ギリシャ語の「Arktouros」からラテン語の「Arcturus」を経て、中英語・現代英語の固有名へと受け継がれた。
当初は「熊の番人」を意味していた（北斗星付近にあることへの言及）。時を経て特定の明るい恒星の名を指す語になり、さらにその名を転用した固有名にも使われるようになった。
