語源
「archencephalon」はギリシャ語の要素「archē」と「enkephalos」に由来し、「archē」は「始まり・主要」を意味し、「enkephalos」は「頭の中（脳）」を意味した。
「archencephalon」はギリシャ語要素（arkhē + enkephalon）から形成され、解剖学のネオラテン語的用法として英語の学術文献に入ったが、やがて「rhinencephalon」や大脳のより具体的な部分名に置き換えられた。
当初は原始的・嗅覚に関する脳の部分を広く指したが、時間とともに用法が限定され、現代の解剖学用語ではほとんど歴史的・古語的な語になった。
