語源
「archdeacon」はギリシャ語の『arkhidiakonos』に由来し、『arkhi-』は「長・上位」を、『diakonos』は「しもべ・執事（助祭）」を意味した。
『arkhidiakonos』は後期ラテン語の『archidiaconus』を経て、古フランス語・アングロ＝ノルマン語や中英語（例：'archidiacon'/'archdeacon'）に入り、現代英語の『archdeacon』になった。
当初は「上位のしもべ（長いしもべ）」を意味したが、やがて司教の下で教区の行政を担当する正式な教会職を指すようになった。
