語源
「archaeopteris」は古代ギリシャ語、具体的には「arkhaios」と「pteris」に由来し、「arkhaios」は「古い」、「pteris」は「シダ」を意味した。
「archaeopteris」は19世紀の古植物学で、ギリシャ語の接頭辞「archaeo-」と「pteris」を組み合わせて学名『Archaeopteris』として命名されたことから成立した。
当初は「古いシダ」を意味したが、やがて「シダ状の姿をしたデボン紀後期のプログイムノスペルム属（化石属）」という現在の意味へと変化した。
