語源
「apulmonic」は否定接頭辞の「a-」（ギリシャ語のa-, 「〜でない」）と「pulmonic」（ラテン語の『pulmo, pulmon-』＝「肺」）から成る。
ラテン語の『pulmo』は中世ラテン語で『pulmonicus』になり、英語で『pulmonic』となった。技術用語として否定接頭辞「a-」が付いて『apulmonic』ができた。
もともとは「〜でない」＋「肺」を意味したが、結び付いて音声学では「肺の気流を用いない」を指し、医学では「肺に関係しない」を指すようになった。
