語源
「applanation」はフランス語を経由したラテン語に由来し、特に後期ラテン語の動詞「applanare」から来ている。接頭辞の「ad-」（pの前では「ap-」となる）は「〜へ/〜に向かって」を意味し、「planare」は「平らにする」を意味する。
「applanation」はフランス語の「applanation」および中世ラテン語の「applanare」（a- + 「planare」）から英語に入り、現代の英語名詞「applanation」に発展した。
元々は「平らにする行為」を意味していたが、時間とともにその基本的な意味は保たれたまま、角膜を平坦化する医学的な専門用語としての意味を持つようになった。
