「Appalachia」は最終的にスペイン語で記録された先住民『アパラチー（Apalachee）』の名に由来する。スペイン語の『Apalache/Apalachee』が地名に用いられ、のちに山脈名へと広がった。
英語にはスペイン語（『Apalachee』）やフランス語の記録を経て入り、この名はやがて『Appalachian（アパラチアン）』山脈に使われ、さらに広い地域名『Appalachia（アパラチア）』になった。
もともとは『アパラチー族』という民族名を指していたが、次第に近接する山や地域の名に移り変わり、現在の地理的・文化的地域を指す語になった。
