「apostille」はフランス語の単語「apostille」に由来し、中世ラテン語の「apostilla」は「余白注、追加の注記」を意味した。
中世ラテン語の「apostilla」（本文に付け加えられた注）からフランス語の「apostille」を経て、現代英語の「apostille」となり、文書の認証を示す法的用語へと移行した。
当初は「余白や追加の注」を意味していたが、徐々に「公文書を認証する公式な証明書」という現在の意味へ変化した。
