語源
「apogean」はギリシャ語を起源とし、後にラテン語・フランス語を経て英語化した語で、ギリシャ語の「apogaion」に由来する。接頭辞「apo-」は「離れて／外へ」、語根「ge」は「地球」を意味した。
「apogean」はギリシャ語「apogaion」→ ラテン語（後期ラテン語）「apogaeum」→ フランス語「apogée」→ 英語「apogee」と変化し、英語で「apogee」に関連する形容詞として形成された。
当初は文字どおり「地球から離れていること」を指したが、次第に軌道上で中心天体から最も遠い点（「遠地点」）を指すようになり、それに関連する形容詞的用法が定着した。
