語源
「apiculus」はラテン語に由来し、元は『apiculus』（『apex』の小辞形）で、『apex』は「頂点・先端」を意味した（PIE語根 *ak- 「鋭い」）。
『apiculus』は植物学・解剖学の記述で用いられる新ラテン語から英語に借用され、形をほとんど変えず英語語として定着した。
当初は「小さな頂点・先端」を意味しており、英語でもその意味を保ち、特に生物学で小さな頂端突起を指す語として使われている。
