「anticyclone」は近代ギリシャ語・新ラテン語由来の要素と英語での造語で、接頭辞「anti-」（ギリシャ語「ἀντί」；「反対」）と「cyclone」（ギリシャ語「κύκλων/κύκλος」；「円、回転するもの」）から成る。
「cyclone」は19世紀にギリシャ語の'kyklōn/kyklos'（「円」）から英語に借用された語であり、「anticyclone」は19世紀半ばに『cyclone』に接頭辞『anti-』を付けて『反対の系』を表す語として英語で作られ、気象学用語として定着した。
当初は『サイクロンの反対の系』すなわち『高気圧の回転系』を意味する造語だったが、その後意味は安定しており、現在は晴天や安定した天候をもたらす大規模な高気圧域を指す語として一般的に使われている。
