語源
『anticlastic』はギリシャ語の結合形に由来する。'anti-'（ギリシャ語 ἀντί）は「反対」を意味し、接尾要素 '-clastic' はギリシャ語 'klastikos'（κλαστικός：割れる・曲がることができる）に由来し、ニューラテン語やフランス語の学術語を通して入った。
『anticlastic』は19〜20世紀の学術英語で形成され、力学・材料学・微分幾何学などで、反対の曲率を持つ表面やたわみを示す技術用語として使われるようになった。
当初は「反対の＋曲げ／割れ」の意味合いで作られた語だが、現在では専門用語として「（直交する方向に）反対の曲率を持つ（鞍形の）」という意味に特化している。
