語源
「anti-tonic」はギリシャ語要素に由来。接頭辞『anti-』は「反〜」を、ギリシャ語の『tonos』は「音（トーン）／張り（伸張）」を意味し、英語／フランス語由来の形容詞『tonic』と結合してできた語です。
『tonic』は中世フランス語『tonique』や後期ラテン語を経てギリシャ語『tonos』から英語に入りました。接頭辞『anti-』はギリシャ語由来で、『anti-』＋『tonic』の組合せが現代英語で『anti-tonic』を生みました。
当初は「トニックに反する（特に薬理学的に回復・強壮を打ち消す）」という意味で用いられ、のちに音楽や音韻論の比喩的用法で「主音に対立する」という意味にも使われるようになりました。
