語源
接頭辞『anti-』はギリシャ語由来で『反対・逆』を意味し、名詞『matter』（ラテン語 'materia' に由来）と結合している。
『matter』は中英語の 'materie'、古フランス語の 'matiere'、ラテン語の 'materia' に由来する。『antimatter』という複合語は20世紀（1930年代以降の反粒子発見の後）に英語で造られた。
当初は『反粒子で構成された物質』を指す語として造られ、科学的意味は基本的に変わっていないが、後にフィクションでのエネルギー源などの意味が加わった。
