「anthracotherium」は新ラテン語に由来し、ギリシャ語の要素『anthrax（石炭）』と『therion（獣）』から成る。
『Anthracotherium』はギリシャ語『anthrax』＋『therion』から新ラテン語で作られ、動物分類の属名として現代に使われている。
当初は化石が見つかった石炭（や石炭含有層）にちなむ『石炭の獣』という文字通りの意味だったが、現在はこの絶滅した偶蹄類の属名を指す用法になっている。
