『anthracene』はギリシャ語を経てニューラテン語に由来し、元の語は『ánthrax』（ギリシャ語: ἀνθραξ）で『石炭』を意味し、化学接尾辞『-ene』は不飽和炭化水素を示す。
『anthracene』は19世紀の化学文献でのフランス語『anthracène』やニューラテン語の形から変化して現代英語の『anthracene』になった。
当初は『石炭から得られる物質』を指していたが、次第に化学式C14H10の特定の多環芳香族炭化水素を指す語へと意味が収束した。
