語源
「antefuture」は接頭辞「ante-」（「前」を意味）と英語の「future」（最終的にラテン語の「futurus」に由来）とを組み合わせてできた語に由来する。
「future」はラテン語 'futurus' から古仏語 'futur' を経て中英語・現代英語の 'future' になり、近代において文法用語として接頭辞 'ante-' を付して 'antefuture' が造られた。
構成要素は元々「未来より前」「これからあるもの」を意味したが、複合語は後に特に『ある未来時点より前に完了していることを示す時制（未来完了）』を指す語として用いられるようになった。
