前に来る・先行する
語源
「antecedental」はラテン語に由来し，特に「antecedere」という語に由来する。ここで「ante-」は「前」を，「cedere」は「行く」を意味する。形容詞は語幹「antecedent-」に形容詞接尾辞「-al」が付いてできた。
「antecedental」は後期ラテン語の「antecedent-」（「antecedere」から）から発展し，中英語で名詞・形容詞の「antecedent」となり，現代英語では接尾辞「-al」を付けて派生した形容詞が生まれた。
当初はラテン語で「前に行く」という意味だったが，次第に「前に起こるもの／前にあるもの」を意味するようになり，現代では「先行する・先行するものに関する」という意味になっている。
