語源
「antecedal」はラテン語に由来し、特に動詞「antecedere」からで、接頭辞「ante-」は「前」を、語根「cedere」は「行く」を意味した。
「antecedal」は中世ラテン語・後期ラテン語の「antecedens」「antecedent-」に由来し、英語では「antecedent」の語幹から形容詞として形成され、「前に来る」の意味にまとまった。
当初は「前に行く」を意味していたが、時代を経て派生語は英語で「先行する」「以前の」という意味になり、現在の用法に至っている。
