「Anomiidae」は新ラテン語に由来し、属名「Anomia」と動物の科名を作る接尾辞「-idae」から構成されている。
「Anomia」は不規則な殻の形を理由に名付けられたギリシャ語系の語を学名としてラテン語化したもので、後に科名を示す接尾辞「-idae」（新ラテン語）を付けて「Anomiidae」という科名ができた。
