語源
「annunciation」は後期ラテン語の『annuntiatio』に由来し、接頭辞'ad-'は「へ（to）」、'nuntiare'は「告げる／発表する」を意味した。
『annuntiatio』は古フランス語の『annonciation』や中英語の『annunciacioun／annunciacion』を経て、現代英語の『annunciation』になった。
当初は「告げる行為」や「知らせ」を指していたが、次第にマリアへの天使の告知（受胎告知）とその祭日に特に結びつくようになり、現在でも一般的な「告知」の意味で使われることがある。
