語源
「anniversary」はラテン語の「anniversarius」に由来し、「annus」は「年」、「versus」（vertereに由来）は「回る・戻る」を意味した（つまり「毎年戻る」）。
「anniversarius」は古フランス語の「anniversaire」を経て中英語に入り、最終的に現代英語の「anniversary」になった。
当初は「年ごとの回帰」や「日付の毎年の繰り返し」を意味していたが、次第に「その日自体」や「その日の祝賀」の意味を持つようになった。
