語源
「annex」はラテン語に由来し、特に過去分詞『annexus』（動詞『annectere』由来）から来ている。接頭辞『ad-』は「〜へ／〜に向かって」を、語根『nectere』は「結ぶ」を意味した。
「annex」は古フランス語・中期フランス語の『annexer』や中英語の『annexen』を経て、現代英語の『annex』になった。
当初は「結びつける（文字どおり結んで付ける）」という意味だったが、時間を経て「（特に領土を）付け加える・併合する」という現在の意味に変化した。
