『animatist』は英語の『animatism』に由来し、この『animatism』は『animate』（語源はラテン語『anima』「息・魂」）＋接尾辞『-ism』から成り、さらに接尾辞『-ist』は「〜の信奉者・従事者」を表す。
20世紀初頭の英語『animatism』から派生して『animatist』が生まれ、現代英語の『animatist』となった。
