語源
「animalcula」はニューラテン語の「animalculum」に由来し、「animal-（生き物）」＋指小辞「-culum（小さなもの）」の構成。
「animalculum」は科学英語に取り入れられ、その中性複数形「animalcula」は近世英語の文献に現れ、フランス語由来の英語形「animalcule」（複数「animalcules」）と17〜19世紀に併存した。
当初は「小さな動物」を文字どおり指したが、次第に初期の顕微鏡で観察された微小生物一般を指すようになり、現代では「microorganisms／microbes」に置き換えられた。
