語源
「animacy」はラテン語の「anima」に由来し、「anima」は「魂・生命・息」を意味した。英語では形容詞「animate」に名詞化接尾辞「-cy」が付いて名詞化された。
「animacy」はラテン語の『animatus』（『animare』の過去分詞）を経て形容詞『animate』になり、そこに接尾辞『-cy』が付いて現代英語の名詞になった。
もともとは「魂」や「呼吸」を指す概念だったが、時代を経て「生きている・有生であるという性質（文法的特徴）」という現代的な意味へ変化した。
