語源
「anicca」はパーリ語に由来し、語「anicca」から来ており、「a-」は「〜でない」、「nicca」は「恒常・永久」を意味する。サンスクリット語「anitya」（「a-」＝「〜でない」＋「nitya」＝「永遠」）とも同根。
サンスクリット語「anitya」はパーリ語で「anicca」となり、19〜20世紀の仏教研究と翻訳を通じて英語の借用語「anicca」となった。
当初は「恒常でないこと」を意味し、現代英語でも仏教的な「無常」の意味でほぼそのまま用いられている。
