語源
『amillennialism』はギリシャ語とラテン語の要素から成る語で、具体的には否定を示すギリシャ語接頭辞『a-』と、ラテン語の『millennium』（『mille』＝千、『annus』＝年）および教義を示す接尾辞『-ism』から成る。
『amillennialism』は近代英語で『millennialism』にギリシャ語接頭辞『a-』を付けて作られた語で、19世紀頃の神学文献で、文字どおりの千年王国を否定する教義を示す用語として用いられるようになった。
当初は黙示録にある文字どおりの千年地上王国を否定する教義という意味で用いられ、現在に至るまでその専門的な意味はほぼ維持されている。
