「アガペティ」はギリシャ語の「アガペトス」に由来し、「アガペ」は「愛」を意味した。
「アガペトス」はラテン語の「アガペトゥス」に変わり、最終的に現代英語の「アガペティ」になった。
当初は「愛される者」や「親愛なる者」を意味していたが、時を経て宗教共同体の一員という現在の意味に進化した。
