語源
語源情報
「a」は古英語の'ān'（'an'の語源でもある）に由来し、さらに祖語のプロト・ゲルマン語'*ainaz'（「1」を意味）に遡る。
歴史的変遷
古英語の'ān'は中英語で'an'や'a'などの形に発展し、数詞の'one'と不定冠詞としての用法が分化した。発音は弱形のシュワに縮約されることが多くなった。
意味の変化
もともとは「1」を意味していたが、次第に「（種類の）1つ、1人（不特定）」という不定冠詞の意味で用いられるようになった。
