語源
「under」は古英語の『under』に由来し、さらに原ゲルマン語の『*underaz』、最終的には『下・下方』を意味する原インド・ヨーロッパ語根『*n̥dʰer』にさかのぼります。
『under』は古英語の『under』から中英語を経て現代英語に至るまで比較的変化が少なく、古高ドイツ語の『untar』などのゲルマン語同根語があります。
当初は空間的な『下・下方』を意味しましたが、時を経て『～の下で（支配・条件）』『～未満（数量）』『不十分に～（接頭辞）』など比喩的・派生的な用法が広がりました。
