語源
「Scorpius」はラテン語の単語『Scorpius』に由来し、『scorpio』は『さそり』を意味した。
「Scorpius」はギリシャ語の『Σκορπιός』（Skorpiós）に由来し、それがラテン語の『Scorpius』となり、最終的に星座名や黄道帯の名として英語に入った。
当初は動物の「さそり」や神話上のさそりの像を指していたが、時間とともに星座の名前、さらに占星術上の星座名を指すようになった。
