語源
『Pterophyllum』はギリシャ語の語『pterophyllon』に由来し、『ptero-』は「羽・羽根」、「phyllon」は「葉」を意味する。
『Pterophyllum』はギリシャ語『pterophyllon』から取り入れられ、新ラテン語で学名の属名『Pterophyllum』として定着した（動物分類学で使用される）。
もともとは「羽のような葉」という意味の語の組合せだったが、次第にひれが羽のように見える魚の属名（エンゼルフィッシュ属）として用いられるようになった。
