語源
「protozoa」は新ラテン語から来ており、ギリシャ語の要素「proto-（最初の）」と「zoon（動物）」から成る複合語である。
単数形『protozoon』はギリシャ語の語根から作られ、学術ラテン語で用いられた。複数形『protozoa』は19世紀に英語の学術用語として定着し、「最初の（原始的な）動物」を指す語として使われた。
当初は「最初の動物（原始的な微小動物）」を意味していたが、生物学の進展に伴い、現代では単細胞真核生物の多様な群を指す語となり、元の分類概念は大きく見直された。
