語源
「Protoctista」はニューラテン語に由来し、ギリシャ語の要素「prōto-（最初）」と「-ktista（作られた）」から形成された。
「Protoctista」は19世紀に（J. Hoggなどが用いた）ニューラテン語として造られ、以前の用語「Protista」に影響されつつ19〜20世紀に現代の生物学文献に定着した。
当初は「最初に作られた（原始的な存在）」という意味を持っていたが、次第に「特定の真核性微生物の分類群」という現代的な意味に変化し、必ずしも『原始的』という含意は持たなくなった。
