語源
「Predestinarianism」はラテン語と英語の構成に由来する：後期ラテン語の「praedestinare」から（「prae-」は「前に」、「destinare」は「定める」）英語の接尾辞「-ism」で教義名になった。
「Predestinarianism」は、後期ラテン語の「praedestinatio」や中世ラテン語の形から中英語の「predestinate／predestination」を経て、『predestinarian』＋『-ism』の形で教義や運動を表す語になった。
当初は「事前に定める」という動詞的意味に関連していたが、次第に「神が個々の永遠の運命をあらかじめ定める宗教的教義」を指す語へと変化し、教義そのものや支持者を指す語として用いられるようになった。
