「Oengus」は古アイルランド語の「Óengus」に由来し、'óen' は「1つ・唯一」を、'gus' は「力・活力」を意味した。
「Óengus」はケルト語の初期形（再建された原ケルト語要素 *oino-「1」＋ *gustus/'gus'「力/選択」）から発展し、古アイルランド語の 'Óengus' を経て現代英語の綴り 'Oengus' や 'Aengus' になった。
