語源
「nightcrawler」は英語に由来する語で、単語「'night'（夜）」と「'crawler'（這うもの）」の合成語であり、「crawl」（古英語 'crāwlian'）は「地面に近く這う／忍び寄ること」を意味した。
「nightcrawler」は19世紀中頃のアメリカ英語に見られ、主に釣りの餌として使われる夜行性の大型ミミズを指した。「crawl」は古英語 'crāwlian' から中英語を経て現代英語の 'crawl' に発展し、それが 'night' と結び付いて「nightcrawler」ができた。
当初は「夜に這うミミズ（餌）」を指していたが、徐々に比喩的に「夜に活動する人」を意味するようになり、さらにコミックの登場人物名としても用いられるようになった。
