語源
「Mars」はラテン語の『Mars』（属格は『Martis』）に由来し、ローマの戦の神の名前である。
ラテン語の『Mars』（属格『Martis』）はイタリック語より前の形から受け継がれ、プロト・イタリック語 *Māworts に関連する。これはおおむね若い男性や戦闘的な存在を指すプロト・インド・ヨーロッパ語の語根 *Mawort- に結びつく。ローマの神の名は天文学的用法で惑星名にも用いられ、中英語を経て英語に入った。
当初は主にローマの戦の神を指したが、時代とともに空に見える天体にもその名があてられ、現在では神話上の人物（戦の神）と天文学上の惑星の両方、さらに現代の企業名などを意味するようになった。
