語源
「Low」は古英語に由来し、具体的には語形『hlēow』／『hlāw』で、当初は『高さがない（低い）』や『（地形の）塚、丘』といった意味を持っていました。
古英語では形が『hlēow』『hlāw』などで使われ、形容詞の意味（低い）や名詞の意味（塚・丘）として現れました。古ノルド語の『lágr』やオランダ語の『laag』などのゲルマン語族の同根語とともに中英語を経て現代英語の『low』になりました。
当初は『塚・丘（名詞）』と『低い（形容詞）』という二つの意味がありましたが、徐々に意味が分かれ、現代英語では主に『高さがない・低い（形容詞・副詞）』が一般的になり、名詞的意味は地名などに残っています。
