語源
「Libya」は古代ギリシャ語の『Λιβύη』（Libyē）に由来し、これはエジプトなどの記録に見られるリブ（Libu／Lubu）という人々の名から来ている。
『Libyē』はラテン語の『Libya』を経て、中世英語の『Libye』などの形になり、最終的に現代英語の『Libya』となった。
当初はエジプト以西の土地や民族（リブ族）を広く指していたが、次第に現代の国家名『リビア』を指すようになった。
