語源
「Levant」はフランス語の「levant」から来ており、「lever（上がる／昇る）」の現在分詞である「levant」は「（太陽が）昇る」という意味を持っていた。
「Levant」は16～17世紀に英語に借用されたフランス語（古・中世フランス語の「levant」）に由来し、その語はラテン語の「levare（持ち上げる／上げる）」に遡る。
当初は「日の昇る方＝東」を意味していたが、次第に地理的・歴史的な用法として「地中海東部の地域」を指すようになった。
