語源
「Holocene」はニューラテン語・近代科学語から来ており、フランス語の「holocène」に影響を受け、最終的にギリシャ語の要素「holos（全体）」と「kainos（新しい）」に由来する。
「Holocene」は19世紀にギリシャ語の「holos」＋「kainos」から形成され、ニューラテン語／フランス語の「Holocenus」／「holocène」を経て英語の「Holocene」として採用された。
最初は「完全に新しい」や「全く最近の」という意味合いだったが、時間を経て約1万1700年前から現在までの地質時代の正式名称を指すようになった。
