語源
「Fe-Al」は元素記号に由来し、特に「Fe」はラテン語の「ferrum」から、「Al」は英語の「aluminium」（最終的にはラテン語の「alumen」由来）から来ている。
「Fe-Al」は元々「iron aluminide」や「iron–aluminum alloy」のような長い呼び方から、材料科学の文献で用いられる簡潔な記法「FeAl」やハイフンを付けた「Fe-Al」へと変化した。
当初は『Fe』と『Al』は単に鉄とアルミニウムの元素記号を表していたが、時間とともに『Fe-Al』は鉄-アルミニウム合金やそれに対応する化合物相を指す略記として定着した。
