語源
「Christology」は新ラテン語の「Christologia」に由来し、最終的にはギリシャ語の要素「Christos」と「logia」から来ている。ここで「Christos」は「油注がれた者（メシア）」、「logia」は「学問・論述」を意味する。
「Christology」は新ラテン語の「Christologia」を経て中世・近世の神学ラテン語を通り英語の「Christology」になった。要素の「Christ」はギリシャ語「Christos」（ヘブライ語の「Mashiach」を翻訳した語）に由来し、接尾辞の「-logy」はギリシャ語「logia」（「logos」から）に由来する。
当初は「油注がれた者についての論述」を意味していたが、時間とともにイエス・キリストの人性と神性に関する神学的研究や教義を指す専門用語に発展した。
