語源
「Anti-Federalist」はアメリカ英語に由来し、接頭辞「anti-」（ギリシャ語由来で「反対」の意）と「Federalist」（連邦制を支持する者）を結合して作られた語です。
「Anti-Federalist」は1787–1788年の米国憲法論争の中で、提案された憲法に反対した人々を指す呼称として生まれました。'Federalist'はラテン語の'foedus'（条約・同盟）に由来する'federal'から来ています。
当初は1787年の米国憲法の批准に反対した人物を特定して指していましたが、時間とともに中央政府の強化に反対する者一般を指す語としても使われるようになりました。
